Constant Voltage vs Constant Current LED Driver: Which Do You Need?

Constant Voltage vs Constant Current LED Driver: Which Do You Need?

LED strip or downlight flickering? Choosing the wrong driver type is the most common cause. Here's how to get it right the first time.

Why the Driver Type Matters

Every LED needs controlled power — either a stable voltage or a stable current. Use the wrong type and you risk flickering, premature failure, or in the worst case, a fire hazard. Singapore's BCA and SS 598 standards exist for exactly this reason.

Constant Voltage (CV) — For LED Strip Lights

A Constant Voltage driver holds the output voltage fixed (e.g. 12V DC) regardless of how many LEDs are connected or how the load changes. The LED strip itself contains built-in resistors on each segment that regulate the current per cut section.

How to Size a CV Driver for COB Strip

  1. Multiply the strip's wattage per metre × total metres you plan to run.
    Example: 12W/m × 4m = 48W total load
  2. Add a 20% headroom buffer: 48W × 1.2 = 57.6W → the 60W driver is the correct choice.
  3. Never exceed 5m on a single run from one driver output to avoid voltage drop at the far end.

Cut Length

The 12V COB strip can be cut every 2.5 cm. Always cut at the marked copper pads; cutting mid-segment will leave a dead section at the end of the roll.

Dimmer Compatibility

Use only PWM-compatible dimmers rated for 12V DC LED loads. Standard TRIAC wall dimmers designed for incandescent bulbs are not compatible and will cause flickering or damage the driver.

Connector Type

The 12V driver uses standard screw-terminal block output. Connect your COB strip's bare-wire end (or DC barrel adapter) directly to the V+ and V− terminals. Observe polarity.

Constant Current (CC) — For Downlights and Panel Lights

A Constant Current driver holds the output current fixed (e.g. 290mA) and allows the voltage to float within a specified range to match the LED load. Downlight COB modules are designed to be driven this way — they have no built-in current-limiting resistors and will fail quickly without a CC driver.

How to Size a CC Driver for Your Downlight

  1. Check the wattage printed on your existing downlight or COB module.
  2. Select the variant whose watt range covers your downlight's rated wattage.
    Example: a 9W downlight → choose the 7W–12W variant.
  3. Do not mix and match: a 290mA driver must only power a single downlight module, not multiple in series or parallel.

Dimmer Compatibility

These isolation drivers are non-dimmable. Do not connect them to a dimmer switch circuit. If dimming is required, you will need a dimmable CC driver — contact us for options.

Connector Type

Each driver ships with a pre-assembled Female DC Barrel Jack. This plugs directly into most standard Singaporean downlight COB modules with a male barrel connector. No splicing needed for standard replacements.

Quick Decision Guide

  • ✅ Mounting LED strips in a wardrobe, cove, cabinet, or under-cabinet? → Constant Voltage (CV) driver + 12V COB strip
  • ✅ Replacing a flickering or dead downlight driver? → Constant Current (CC) 290mA driver, matched to your downlight wattage
  • ❌ Never connect a CV driver to a COB downlight module directly — without current limiting, the module will burn out rapidly.
  • ❌ Never connect a CC driver to a strip light — the floating voltage will exceed the strip's rated 12V and damage the LEDs.

⚠️ When to Stop and Call a Licensed Electrician

LED driver replacement is generally DIY-friendly in Singapore for like-for-like swaps. However, you must engage a Licensed Electrical Worker (LEW) if any of the following apply:

  • The ceiling wiring or junction box needs to be modified or extended
  • Your existing wiring shows signs of damage, scorching, or melted insulation
  • You are installing new power points, conduit, or running new mains cabling
  • The installation is in a wet area (bathroom, outdoor covered space) requiring IP-rated fittings
  • You are unsure of the live/neutral/earth designation of any wire
  • The circuit does not trip correctly on a residual current device (RCD/ELCB) test

Under the Electricity Act (Cap. 89A), illegal electrical work can result in fines up to SGD 10,000 and is a safety risk to you and your household. When in doubt, always engage a LEW. You can verify credentials at EMA.gov.sg.
